Are your best years behind you or are they yet to come?
What’s your take on this? What do you tell others or say to yourself in quiet moments? Here’s an idea….. However you' answer, you’re right.
We're all somewhere on our journey to being a better version of ourselves. Even if you're just starting and on shakey ground, you know there's more to life and you're making efforts to being fitter and healthier. Please know that you're inspiring others along the way.
I knew this before but I see this over and over when I look around. The decline most people associate with aging is not age itself but mostly neglect, no goal, no plan or mental barriers. Self betterment doesn't have to mean getting ripped. It can be, but it can also mean getting fitter, stonger, faster more flexible, better nutrition, reducing pain through quality movement etc. Only we can choose what that means for ourselves. I think we're happiest when we're challenging ourselves and putting in the work. I reckon some of our greatest moments in life are when we surprise ourselves. "If I can do this, what else could I do that I didn't believe I could?!" is a beautiful inner voice.
I personally feel sad when I hear folks talk about how amazing they were in their youth. Like their best years are behind them and it's all downhill from here. Reflecting meloncholicly on when health, fitness and high metabolism were basically free. For anyone feeling this way, I'll show you someone older, dealing with more shit and still pushing themselves and achieving amazing things.
It's just a choice. How do you want your second half of life to look and feel? Is a few hours of discomfort a week worth it for a better healthspan. What's the alternative? Giving up? Becoming dependant and depressed and sick? Doesn't seem like a good option to me. I reckon our best years are ahead of us and I hope you all do too.
I saw a great billboard many years ago for a pain medication. It showed an elderly woman accelerating away from her rocking chair and it said "If you feel old age catching up......just walk a bit faster". I am still inspired by that message.
Here I am doing my best to pretend I'm not in my 50s. I didn't start with 40kg hanging off me. I started with bodyweight and the determination to get stronger and beat my last workout even by a tiny bit. Here was one of my WTF moments. Please share some of your best moments. I'd love to celebrate with you.
Screw you old age and gravity! Let's go!
